For more information about the pilgrimage, visit www.youthmarchforlife.org or contact efroeba@smhsbr.org.

PRO VITA DINNER: The need for financial aid  for the March for Life and availability of a low cost for all is met primarily through our Pro Vita Benefit Dinner and Silent Auction, which will be held in the St. Sebastian Multipurpose Building on Thursday, October 19  at 6:30 PM. It a beautiful night to celebrate life, the impact of the pilgrimage and the work of the local Pro Life community. The cost is $80 per person or $600 for a table of 8. It is a wonderful night to support and celebrate the March for Life Pilgrimage. For more information about the event, purchase tickets, and to donate to the auction please visit www.youthmarchforlife.org or contact Mrs. Emily Froeba at efroeba@smhsbr.org.

SENIOR RETREAT | REMAIN IN MY LOVE: The Senior Retreat will take place on Monday, October 30 from 7:30 AM to 8:00 PM at Our Lady of Hope in Mississippi.  Students will meet at school and be transported to and from the retreat by Hotard bus. Our seniors will focus on looking at how their faith has carried them this far and what the future holds.  Students may wear jeans, sweatpants, or khakis, with the retreat t-shirt.  Forms have been distributed to students in class and more information, as well as forms, have been emailed to parents. These forms must be returned by October 6. Parents, please be on the lookout for this information and (2) items needed from parents by October 14 in your inbox. We are also asking parents who are able to contribute $25 toward the cost of the Hotard bus. We are opting for charter buses to make the retreat special and the ride more enjoyable. All forms and parent information may be found at this link.

ALL SOULS ALTAR:  The Spanish Club will be preparing to celebrate the Mexican holiday of El Día de los Muertos or “Day of the Dead.” This Catholic holiday is a tradition closely associated with All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day and is held on November 1 and 2. The celebration is filled with beautiful imagery and symbols based around family and friends gathering to pay respects and to remember those who have passed away. Spanish Club members will be learning about the history of the day and the symbols that are associated with it. In honor of El Día de los Muertos, the club will be gathering materials to construct an ofrenda (altar) to represent their family members who have died. We would like to extend the celebration to the rest of the school community by having students submit a picture of a family member who has passed on, if they choose to participate. More details will be released as the time comes closer, and we hope all students, faculty, and staff will consider participating to make this a fruitful experience for our school. Any questions may be emailed to Spanish Club Moderator Mr. Taffaro at ataffaro@smhsbr.org.

A NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL:

On September 29, our school community celebrated our St. Michael the Archangel Feast Day with an all-school Mass and a Eucharistic Procession.  In our 40th year of serving families who desire a Catholic education for their children, we are grateful for our rich past and those who have come before us to build this school into the outstanding high school that it is today.  We celebrate our present with a dedication to our Catholic roots, to academic excellence, and to our students’ personal development.  Our future is bright as we continue to complete our campus with our new stadium project, always focusing on forming the young men and women entrusted to us as committed disciples of Christ.

The first nine weeks will end on Tuesday, October 3, and grades will be posted on Friday, October 6.  This is the time for parents and students to pause and assess the successes and the challenges so far this school year.  Students have so many resources available to them.  Our dedicated teachers are available to help their students outside of class time.  It may be before school, after school, at lunch, or by appointment.  All the student has to do is ask.  Please encourage your student to ask for help if needed.  The National Honor Society Lab and the Math Lab are open during the week to help students complete assignments or understand course work.  Grade level counselors are available to work with students to get them the help that they need to be successful.  Attendance is an important part of working towards success.  If a student is not at school, he/she is missing valuable information and experiences.

As we focus on the mental health of our students this year, parents are reminded of the special suicide prevention program, MY ASCENSION, which will take place on Wednesday, October 4, beginning at 5:30 PM in the St. Sebastian Multipurpose Building.  The movie will begin at 6:00 PM with a panel discussion after.  Parents are strongly encouraged to attend with their high school students.  You are welcome to bring your own movie snacks or buy some at the concession stand.  This program will be good information to facilitate important conversations with your teenager.

Our St. Michael Open House will be held on Wednesday, October 25, beginning at 4:00 PM.  This event will give us an opportunity to let perspective students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades and their parents know about the advantages of a St. Michael High School experience.  Please encourage any junior high student who you know to register to attend our Open House so that they may see the unique opportunities that await them as Warriors.  As parents of our students, we rely on your assistance in spreading the good news that is St. Michael High School.

Thank you for all that you do to support our mission to educate young people to Seek the Truth, Live the Faith, and Serve Like Christ.  We count on your continued prayers.

God Bless,
Ellen B. Lee, Principal

Our Fall sports are already approaching the halfway point. We have shown them a tremendous amount of support and they have given us some outstanding performances. Let’s keep it up Warriors!
