HELP DESK NEWS: Dell Laptop Chargers that need to be replaced should be purchased through the school to make sure they are fully compatible with the laptops used at school. It is crucial to adhere to the designated chargers provided by the school, as using an unauthorized charger may jeopardize the warranty coverage and insurance protection according to information from Dell. Even if alternative chargers claim compatibility, there exists a risk of delivering excessive voltage to the system, potentially causing damage. To ensure the longevity and performance of your device, it is strongly advised to utilize school-approved chargers to maintain warranty integrity and safeguard against potential issues arising from incompatible power sources.
MARDI GRAS HOLIDAY: St. Michael High School will be closed Monday, February 12 through Friday, February 16 for the Mardi Gras Holiday. The school office will be open February 14, 15 & 16 from 7:30 AM-12:00 PM. Students will return to school on Monday, February 19.

GRADES: Grades are updated each week on PlusPortals. Please talk to your student about his/her progress in all classes during this third nine-weeks. This nine weeks grading period ends on March 8. If you have any questions or concerns about a particular class, please contact the teacher immediately.
COURSE SELECTION FOR 2024-2025:
During the week of January 29 counselors will visit classes to discuss course selection for the 2024-2025 school year. Parents/guardians are responsible for reviewing and discussing academic requirements with their children and indicating parental approval of the student’s proposed schedule by signing the appropriate line indicated on the course selection sheet.
Teacher signatures are also required for specific classes indicated by asterisks (*) noted on the course selection sheets. Students must obtain teacher signatures for those classes prior to online registration in order to be considered for enrollment in that class. All current students must register for classes electronically using their activated PlusPortals student account. Course registration opens on the morning of presentations by the counselors and will remain open until Tuesday, February 6 at 7:00 AM.
Completed course selection sheets are to be signed by both the student and his/her parent/guardian prior to completing online registration and then returned to their grade level counselor by Tuesday, February 6. No course schedule changes will be considered until May 1 unless there is a discrepancy as determined by the counselor. At that time, students may meet with school counselors if they still have concerns regarding their 2024-2025 class schedules. Any requests for schedule changes must be placed in writing by the parent(s) and submitted to the appropriate grade level counselor during the period of May 1-May 23. All schedule change fees will be waived during this period. After May 23, all written requests for schedule changes must be accompanied by a check for $25.00 made payable to St. Michael the Archangel High School.
Please note: The scheduling requests submitted are considered a commitment on the part of the students and their parents for enrollment in the classes they have asked the school to provide. Selections made at this time are for the entire 2024-2025 school year.
TUITION & REGISTRATION INFORMATION: Tuition and registration information will be emailed to all families on March 1. Please contact the school office if you do not receive this email. The re-registration process for current students will be conducted online via FACTS in March.
FINALIZING COLLEGE ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS: Early in the second semester for seniors is a good time to finalize any documentation necessary for a student’s college admission requirements, such as sending immunization records, completing housing and orientation registration, or sending in test scores. Please make sure your senior has referred to his/her college admission checklist per the college institution to complete these requirements.
REMINDER TO FILE THE FAFSA: Seniors and senior parents, please remember to complete the FAFSA, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, in order to receive any financial assistance and/or to apply for TOPS and other scholarships per the instructions of colleges and universities. Your FAFSA must be filed by June 30 in order to receive TOPS. Visit https://studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa to get started or to finish your application. If you need assistance completing the FAFSA, please call the FAFSA Helpline at 1-800-433-3243. If you wish to fill out the application for the TOPS scholarship only, you may do so on the Louisiana Office of Student Financial Assistance, LOSFA, website at https://mylosfa.la.gov/applications/award-system/. By filling out the LOSFA application only, and not the FAFSA, your student will not qualify for loans, grants, or work study. Both FAFSA and LOSFA require a qualifying ACT score.
REQUEST FOR COLLEGE ACCEPTANCE LETTERS FROM SENIORS: In order to assist in college preparation and planning, it is critical that seniors and their parents provide Mrs. Rachel Cart with copies of all letters of acceptance and any scholarship and financial aid awards from colleges and universities, whether or not the senior will eventually attend that particular school. Please send copies of these documents via email to rcart@smhsbr.org, or by fax, or in person. The names of the colleges and universities to which the senior has been accepted will be published in the Graduation Program, while a list of the scholarships which were offered to the student will appear in the Baccalaureate Mass & Senior Honors Convocation Program. The only way we may publish this information is if parents and students share this information with us. Please provide Mrs. Cart with copies of acceptance and scholarship letters as soon as they are received.

CONGRATULATIONS
Blaise Fox
Student of the Year for St. Michael High School
Blaise Fox has been named as the 2023-2024 St. Michael High School Student of the Year. During his four years at St. Michael, Blaise has truly encompassed what it means to be a Warrior and has raised the standards for all future St. Michael students. Whether it be in the classroom, on the field performing with the band, or on the court with the basketball team, Blaise has forged a trail of excellence through St. Michael.
Blaise is very active on campus. He is a member of many teams and clubs and also holds leadership positions. He is a current member of the Warrior Marching, Jazz, and Symphonic Bands, where he is a talented trombone player. When he is not playing his instrument with the band, you can find Blaise on the court helping lead the Warrior Basketball team to a victory. He is also a member of several clubs on campus including; Mu Alpha Theta, National Honor Society, Beta, and the Chess Club. Blaise is also very strong in his faith life and serves on the Peer Ministry and Retreat Leader teams at St. Michael and is also a member of the leadership team at his home parish.
With such a full schedule, Blaise has still found time to excel academically. Not only does he maintain a cumulative 4.61 GPA, he has been named as a National Merit Scholar Semifinalist and has conquered the nearly impossible feat of scoring a perfect score (36) on his ACT test. Only 25% of test takers score a perfect score.
Congratulations Blaise on being named the St. Michael Student of the Year!

CONGRATULATIONS
Mrs. Emily Froeba
Teacher of the Year for St. Michael High School
Emily Froeba has been named the St. Michael High School Distinguished Educator for the 2023-2024 school year. As our Campus Minister, she teaches our Leadership and Faith class, a religion elective that challenges students to learn to live out their faith among their peers. While looking for a way to get her students to use what they have learned through their first three high school years of religion classes, Emily instituted the Senior Religion Social Justice Capstone Project where seniors choose a social justice topic that they are interested in, integrate that topic into their service for the year, do their own individual research on the topic, and interview professionals or people close to the topic. This capstone project brings the real-life challenges of today into the religion classroom. Emily’s goal is to get her students to think critically about their faith and their call to serve those in need.
Emily has worked with school leaders to encourage parents to have a more inclusive role in the faith formation of the children. She has organized St. Michael Prayer Warriors where parents gather to pray for the needs of their children. She has also had a special prayer service for parents who meet their seniors returning from senior retreat. She sends out a Campus Ministry quarterly communication to parents with information on faith formation and teens, on how to speak to your child after he/she returns from a class retreat, and on how to approach difficult faith topics that are so important in the culture of today. She also has instituted father/son, mother/daughter, father/daughter, and mother/son annual events centered around our Catholic faith.
Through her job at St. Michael, Emily has provided unique opportunities to high school youth throughout the Diocese of Baton Rouge. As part of her outreach, she coordinates a night, once a quarter, for all high school students called MP3, which stands for music, prayer, praise, and pizza. It is an evening of games, faith talks, adoration, and music, where the goal is to plant the seeds of faith in our young men and young women. For the past eleven years, Emily has also served as the Pilgrimage Director for the Diocesan March for Life. Emily and her team plan all aspects of this event each year for high school youth in the Diocese. This six-day trip to Washington, D.C. is a pilgrimage that promotes vocations by bringing along priests, deacons, seminarians, and nuns to interact with the young people each day. Emily’s efforts make this a life-changing event for many young people who return with a deeper understanding of their faith and a closer relationship with Christ.
Emily is a gift to St. Michael High School and to all those she meets. We are proud to name her our St. Michael High School Distinguished Educator.

A NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL:
Happy Catholic Schools Week! We join with Catholic schools in celebrating the 50th anniversary of Catholic Schools Week. St. Michael High School certainly embodies the theme of Catholic Schools: United in Faith and Community. We are so fortunate to have the most dedicated and talented faculty and staff. Our parents are outstanding as they partner with us to help form their children as committed disciples of Christ. Our St. Michael students strive to give their best in their academic studies, their faith development, and their clubs and sports. Our hearts are filled with gratitude for the cooperation and support of our entire school community. We are blessed.
As a school community, we celebrate our Distinguished Educator for St. Michael High School, Mrs. Emily Froeba, and our Student of the Year, Mr. Blaise Fox. We also recognized some of our faculty members for their years of service to Catholic schools: Mrs. Mary Richardson for ten years; Mr. Jason Chauvin for fifteen years; Mrs. Melissa Heroman, Mr. Rob Smith and Mrs. Jackie Moseley for twenty years of service; and Mr. Drew Hart and Mrs. Shannon Messina for twenty-five years of service. We are grateful for their dedication to the ministry of Catholic Education.
At our Multicultural Mass, we acknowledge and celebrate diversity with a rich mix of cultural experiences that allow our students to see and appreciate the unique gifts that we each were given by God. We hope that the experiences at this Mass serve to stimulate further conversations in fostering understanding and respect among our students and our teachers.
How fortunate we are to have such a wonderful school community! Thank you to all who make St. Michael High School the outstanding and one of a kind school that it is. We ask for your continued prayers for our ministry of education.
God Bless,
Ellen B. Lee
