The Purpose of Service Hours
Serving others is at the very heart of the Christian life, for Jesus came not to be served, but to serve. Jesus teaches us again and again that in encountering and serving people in need we are meeting and loving God. Jesus demands service as a condition of discipleship, and does not make it merely a matter of personal choice or just a nice thing to do.
• At the Last Supper Jesus washed the feet of his apostles and told them, “I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.” (John 13:15)
• The criterion of judgment will be the deeds of mercy that have been done for others as Jesus stated in his discourse: “And the King will say to them in reply, ‘Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’” (Matthew 25:40)
• After the Resurrection Jesus specifically commands his disciples to “Feed my lambs…Feed my sheep.” (John 2:15,17)
An effective Catholic educational program must proclaim the message of the Gospel to the students. St. Michael the Archangel High School is committed to achieving this goal.
